ACCI. - Today Guadix, in the province of Granada (Spain), a very ancient city, formerly a Roman colony. From the earliest years of the 4th century it was an episcopal see. Indeed Felix, first among the nineteen bishops present at the Council of Illiberis (Elvira, Granada), held around the year 300, was bishop of A. From the signatures of the councils of Toledo and from two inscriptions the names of several bishops of A. are obtained (end of the 6th century and 7th century). Isidore of Beja has preserved the memory of Frodoarius, illustrious for virtue and learning, who governed the see of Acci in the year 719, under the Arabs. More than a century later, Quiricus, the last known bishop of A., attended the Council of Cordoba (839), in which the heresy of the Acephali was condemned. St. Eulogius of Cordoba recounts the martyrdom of the Accitan St. Fandilas, which took place in that city on 13 June 853. The see was re-established in the 15th century under the name of Guadix (v.).
