Bull elevating Genoa to an archbishopric and subjecting three Corsican bishoprics

Bull of Pope Innocent II ·

1 Just is the Lord and hath loved justice; equity hath looked upon his countenance (a). If the Son of God was made man for a lost man, and endured ignominious death for his redemption and salvation; therefore the catholic and holy Mother Church of God, lest her sons be damned perpetually, ought to expend her goods with a cheerful countenance and joyful mind, since the very reason of equity and justice demands it (1) unto him. Wherefore the most sacred Apostolic See, providing for the salvation of souls, because from the discord and war which once arose between the said city of Genoa and Pisa, fostered by the most cunning enemy of mankind, there have resulted incomparable slaughters of men, captivities of Christians, and innumerable destructions of churches; in order that so detestable a suit and dissension may henceforth cease, thy person and through thee the Church of Genoa from the aforesaid city, which hath been faithful to blessed Peter and to the holy Roman Church, and hath been ready to serve, and doth promise more willingly to do so henceforth, we exalt with glorious prerogative in honour and exaltation. Thee therefore, dearest brother Syre, archbishop, adorning with the dignity of the pallium and bestowing greater grace, we promote to the rank of archbishop, and three bishoprics in Corsica, namely Maranen, Nebolensem, and a third, whose see we establish as the Church of St. Peter of Acci, which shall have one parish of Marana and another of Maria, and Vobzensem and that of Brunate, which we now newly establish, we subject to thee and thy successors by metropolitan right. Nevertheless the bishopric of Genoa and thee namely, and thy successors, freed from all subjection, we freely retain in our own hand, decreeing that the archbishop of Genoa be adorned with archiepiscopal honour, with three churches added as suffragans in Corsica, and two others adjoining.

BULLARIUM ROMANUM An. C. 1133

2 the archbishop of Genoa in that order in which also the archbishop of Pisa, by the sole Roman Pontiff shall be consecrated. But if perchance the archbishop of Pisa should be consecrated by his suffragans, the archbishop of Genoa likewise shall be consecrated by his in like manner. Then moreover within the Church taking precedence (1) namely on the days of the Lord's Supper and Easter, the Ascension of the Lord, Pentecost, in the festival of the Apostles Peter and Paul, St. Lawrence, three festivals of St. Mary, the Nativity of the Lord, the Epiphany, and on the day of the anniversary of thy consecration, in the consecrations also of bishops, basilicas and ordinations of clerics: To the same we commit also the abbey of Tyre for improvement (saving the property and consent of the holy Roman Church) to thee, venerable brother archbishop Syre, we commit. Therefore let no ecclesiastical or secular person henceforth, knowing this page of our constitution, presume to come against it rashly; if, admonished a second or third time, he shall not make fitting satisfaction, let him be deprived of the dignity of his power and honour, and let him know himself to be answerable to divine judgment for the iniquity perpetrated, and let him be separated from the most sacred Body and Blood of God and of our Lord Redeemer Jesus Christ, and in the final examination let him be subject to strict punishment. But to all who shall observe these our statutes be the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that they may both here receive the fruit of good action, and before the strict Judge may find the rewards of eternal peace. Amen.

BULLARIUM ROMANUM An. C. 1133

Amen.
