ACCIA (ACCI). - Ancient bishopric on the island of Corsica, located in the canton of La Porta, arrondissement of Bastia. This ancient diocese, of which the ruins of the cathedral of St. Peter of A. recall the memory to us, was created in the year 1133, when Pope Innocent II wished to re-establish peace between the republic of Genoa and that of Pisa (v. AIACCIO). In reality, the pontiff would have erected it in that year following the dismemberment of the dioceses of Aleria and Mariana, not only, according to Rinieri, for an equitable distribution of suffragan sees to the one and the other archbishopric, but also in memory of the ancient diocese of Taina or Tavagna, destroyed by the barbarians in the 6th century. In 1563 Pius IV united the bishopric of A. with that of Mariana, to which it remained annexed, as the consistorial archives testify, until the suppression of both dioceses, which occurred following the Napoleonic Concordat of 1801.
