ACCIA (ACCI). - An ancient bishopric on the island of Corsica, situated in the canton of Porta, district of Bastia. This ancient diocese, of which the ruins of the cathedral of S. Pietro d'A. recall its memory, was created in the year 1133, when Pope Innocent II wished to restore peace between the republic of Genoa and
that of Pisa (v. AIACCIO). In fact, the pontiff is said to have erected it in that year following the division of the dioceses of Aleria and Mariana, not only, according to Rinieri, for an equitable distribution of suffragan sees between the one and the other archbishopric, but also in memory of the ancient diocese of Taina or Tavagna, destroyed by the barbarians in the 6th century. In 1563 Pius IV united the bishopric of A. with that of Mariana, to which it remained attached, as the consistory archives attest, until the suppression of both dioceses, which occurred following the Napoleonic Concordat of 1801.
