ACCIAIUOLI, ANGELO. - Cardinal, born in Firenze on 15 April 1340, died in Pisa on 31 May 1408 or 12 June 1409. On 3 Dec. 1375 he was appointed by Gregory XI bishop of Rapolla, in the kingdom of Naples. In 1383 he was transferred by Urban VI to the archbishopric of Firenze, and in Dec. 1384 or Jan. 1385 he was created cardinal of S. Lorenzo in Damaso. He defended Urban VI in his work Apologeticus libellus contra Transalpinos Senatores de Urbani VI electione.
He was of great assistance to Boniface IX, who appointed him vice-chancellor of the Apostolic See (1406) and archpriest of the Vatican Basilica. After serving for some time as legate in the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, he was appointed, together with Margherita di Durazzo, tutor to the king and governor of the kingdom during the minority of Ladislao di Durazzo, whom he himself subsequently crowned king in 1390. Numerous difficult legations were entrusted to him. He upheld Ladislao’s rights to the throne of Hungary and attended his coronation at Zara in 1403. Having returned to Rome, he pacified the Orsini, who had rebelled against the Pontiff. Innocent VII entrusted him with the reform of the monastery of S. Paolo fuori le Mura. He attended the election of Gregory XII, but later took part in the Council of Pisa. In the sixteenth century his body was transferred from Pisa to the Certosa di Firenze.
