ALZOG, JOHANNES BAPTIST. — Ecclesiastical historian, born at Ohlau on 29 June 1808, died at Freiburg im Breisgau on 1 March 1878. Ordained a priest in 1834, he was professor of ecclesiastical history and exegesis at Posen, Hildesheim, and Freiburg. In 1841 he published a Lehrbuch der Kirchengeschichte and in 1866 a Handbuch der Patrologie. The former work in particular enjoyed wide circulation in its time and was translated into several languages. He was also a contributor to the Wetter-Welte's Kirchenlexikon. In 1869 A. came to Rome, invited by Pius IX, to take part in the work of preparing the First Vatican Council.
