ALZOG, JOHANNES BAPTIST.— Ecclesiastical historian, born at Ohlau on 29 June 1808, died at Freiburg in Breisgau on 10 March 1878. Ordained priest in 1834, he was professor of ecclesiastical history and exegesis at Posen, Hildesheim, and Freiburg. In 1841 he published a *Lehrbuch der Kirchengeschichte*, and in 1866 a *Handbuch der Patrologie*. The former work, especially, enjoyed wide circulation in his day and was translated into several languages. He was also a contributor to Wetzler-Welte’s *Kirchenlexikon*. In 1869 the author was invited to Rome by Pius IX to take part in the preparatory work for the Vatican Council.
