Ancessi, Victor-Antoine

ANCESSI, VICTOR-ANTOINE. - French Orientalist, b. at Saint-Affrique on 16 Aug. 1844, d. there on 12 Dec. 1878.

After completing his studies at the Jesuit college of his native city, he followed in the footsteps of three uncles who were priests. At the seminary of St. Sulpice, under the direction of Le Hir (v.), he studied the Oriental languages. Ordained a priest in 1869, he went to Egypt to study, on its monuments, its relations with the Bible; then, as chaplain and assistant parish priest in Paris, he gave excellent proofs of his scientific preparation; but, of weak constitution, at only 34 years of age he was snatched away from his studies. He left, besides works on comparative Semitic grammar, L'Egypte et Moïse, Paris 1875; Atlas biblique, ibid. 1876; Job et l'Egypte, le Rédempteur et la vie future dans les civilisations primitives, ibid. 1877.
