ANGELO da SPOLETO. - Franciscan missionary; the year of his birth is uncertain; d. in 1314. Between 1303 and 1304 he made a journey with four companions to Egypt, to free Christian slaves, after which he undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. On returning to Italy he joined, in July 1307, the company of missionaries who, with the seven suffragans of John of Monte Corvino, were setting out for Tartary. To A. was assigned the mission of Northern Tartary, in the northern regions of the Black Sea. He was also "custos" of Gazaria, present-day Crimea. He was killed by a group of Bulgars in the city of Maurocastro, at the mouth of the Dniester, after an apostolate of about seven years.
