ANGELO da SPOLETO. - Franciscan missionary; the year of his birth is uncertain; d. 1314. Between the years 1303 and 1304 he made a journey with four companions to Egypt, to free Christian slaves, after which he undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. On his return to Italy, in July 1307, he joined the company of missionaries who, with the seven suffragans of GIOVANNI da MONTE CORVINO, set out for Tartary. To A. was assigned the mission of Northern Tartary, in the northern regions of the Black Sea. He was also "custodian" of Gazaria, now Crimea. He was killed by a group of Bulgarians in the city of Maurocastro, at the mouth of the Dniester, after an apostolate of about seven years.
