ANNIBALE of GENOVA. - Born 1 Sept. 1723, he entered the Capuchin Friars Minor at the age of 17; after being ordained priest, he preached for some years in Liguria, but, wishing to bring the Gospel to the infidels, he was assigned in 1751 to the island of São Tomé, where, preaching, baptizing, and instructing, he travelled through a large part of the territory; in 1755 he went to the nearby island of Principe; in 1756 he landed in Benin; finally, in 1757, he moved to Brazil. Having returned to his homeland after 17 years of apostolate, he died in Genova in 1785. He wrote a detailed account of his travels, still in manuscript in the general archive of the Order: Viaggio in Africa e America portuguesa fatto dal P. Annibale da Genova, missionario apostolico cappuccino, ecc.
