ANTOLINEZ, AGUSTIN. — Augustinian theologian, born at Valladolid on 6 December 1554, died at Compostella on 19 June 1626. He made his religious profession in the Augustinian convent of his city in 1571; in 1582 he was master of students in the convent of Salamanca.
Professor of theology at the University of Valladolid and subsequently of theology and Sacred Scripture at the Salmanticense, he was also superior of the flourishing province of Castile from 1598 to 1607. He resumed teaching until 1623, the year in which he was preconized bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo. On 26 August 1624 he was transferred to the metropolitan see of Compostella, where he died in the odor of sanctity.
He wrote: Tractatus de Deo, de gratiae auxiliis et de praedestinatione; In I-II circa qq. de voluntario; In cap. 2 libri Iob: Expositio Bellue cruciatne Sixti V; commentaries on several psalms; Vida de s. Juan de Sahagán (Salamanca 1605); Historia de S. Clara de Montefalco (Salamanca 1613); Regla dada por N. S. Agustín a sus morjes con las constituciones para la nueva recolección de ellas (Madrid 1616); histories of other saints of his Order, which remained unpublished; Amores de Dios y el alma, a commentary on the mystical songs of s. Giovanni della Croce (Madrid, National Library, MSS 2037, 6895, 7072, and 13505).
