AMBROGIO DA CORI (DEI MASSARI, CORANUS, CORIOLANUS)

AMBROGIO da Cori (of the MASSARI, CORANUS, CORIOLANUS). — Augustinian preacher, humanist, and theologian, d. in Rome in 1485. A student in Florence in 1452, he became a bachelor in ’58, a master in ’61, regent in Perugia in ’63 and in Naples in ’65. He was superior of the Roman province (1466–70), procurator of the Order (1470–76), and prior general (1476–85). Esteemed by Pius II, Paul II, and Sixtus IV, he was imprisoned in Castel S. Angelo by order of Innocent VIII in March 1485; transferred a few days later to S. Agostino, he died in May of the same year. He wrote: *Commentarii super regulam d. Augustini*; *Defensorium ordinis*; *Chronica Ordinis fratrum heremitarum* (Rome 1841); *Orationes*, some printed, others unpublished (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, ms. 5621); *De animae dignitatibus*, etc.
