ANTOMMARCHI, FRANCESCO. - Physician, b. at Morsiglia (Corsica) in 1790, d. at Santiago de Cuba on 3 April 1838. He was chosen by Cardinal Fesch and by Madame Letizia to replace O'Meara as physician to Napoleon in his final exile. Having reached St. Helena in September 1819, A. remained there until the emperor's death, refusing to sign the autopsy report, since he held that the death had not been caused by a cancer of the stomach, as was maintained there. In 1830 he was in the service of the Polish insurgents, in Warsaw. Shortly afterwards he decided to publish the death mask taken from the face of the deceased emperor, but it aroused such a stir that it was considered a hoax; he therefore had to leave Europe for America, where he spent the last years of his life, first at New Orleans and then on the island of Cuba. He wrote Les derniers moments de Napoléon (Paris 1825); and Mémoires et observations sur le choléra regnant à Varsovie (Paris 1831).
