AUGUSTI, JOHANN CHRISTIAN WILHELM. - German Protestant theologian, b. 27 Oct. 1771 at Eschenbergen, d. at Koblenz on 28 Apr. 1841. In 1803 he was professor of theology at Breslau, in 1819 at Bonn. He was one of the most learned German Protestant theologians of the 19th century, especially deserving of credit in the field of Christian archaeology.

He published many writings, of which the best known are the following: Die Apocryphen des Alten Testaments (Leipzig 1806); Grundriss einer historisch-britischen Einleitung in das Alte Testament (ibid. 1806); Dogmengeschichte (ibid. 1808); System der christlichen Dogmatik nach dem Lehrbegriff der evangelischen Kirche (ibid. 1809); Lehrbuch der christlichen Altertümer (ibid. 1819); Denkwürdigkeiten aus der christlichen Archäologie (12 vols., ibid. 1817-31); Handbuch der christlichen Archäologie (3 vols., ibid. 1837); Beiträge zur christlichen Kunstgeschichte und Liturgie (2 vols., ibid. 1841).
