AURIEMMA, TOMASO. - Jesuit ascetical writer, b. in Naples probably in 1614, d. there on 26 Nov. 1671. A religious from 1632, he taught letters and moral theology, then was a rural missionary. Cultured and deeply pious, he published works breathing faith and uncommon erudition.

The most celebrated is a practical treatise on devotion to Mary Most Holy: Affetti scambievoli tra la Vergine SS. e suoi devoti, Naples 1657, in two parts of ca. 330 pages each: na: it is very rich in anecdotes, whose sources are almost always cited with great diligence. Another excellent work is Stanza dell'animo nelle piaghe di Gesù, Naples 1651-57, in two parts, a small practical treatise on the Christian life, followed by a long series of meditations adorned with texts of the holy Fathers and Doctors; it was translated into Spanish and German, and often reprinted, still in the 18th and 19th centuries. He also left short works on the Virgin and St. Anne.
