BAGADIO. - Bishop of Bostra in Arabia, while he was far from his see, was condemned and deposed by the bishops Cyril, seemingly of Jerusalem, and Palladius, who replaced him with Agapius. He protested energetically against the injustice at the Council of Constantinople of 381, at which his rival also sat. The Council charged Gregory of Nyssa with settling the dispute, but he did not succeed. The contenders then turned to Pope Siricius, who entrusted the matter to Theophilus of Alexandria. The controversy, which dragged on for more than 10 years, was resolved only by the Council of Constantinople of 394, very probably in favor of B., as may be inferred from the surviving fragments of the Acts of the Council.
