BALANGERO, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. – Missionary and writer. Born in Envie (Saluzzo) on 12 June 1849, he entered the Brignole-Sale College in Genoa in 1868 and departed for Australia in 1872, whence, in 1884, he proceeded to Ceylon. Returning in 1895, he became director of the Convitto nazionale of Turin; he then went to the United States, to Cincinnati, where he died on 7 May 1919. He wrote his biographical memoirs, which still possess a certain interest today: Australia e Ceylon. Studi e ricordi di tredici anni di missione (1897).
