BARABINO, NICCOLÒ. - Painter, b. at Sampierdarena in 1832, d. at Florence in 1891. Endowed with an extraordinary facility in fresco and in oil painting, he enriched churches and palaces with his compositions.

Very well known are the Galileo before the Inquisition, in the Palazzo Celesia; the Columbus at Salamanca, in the Palazzo Orsini; the Glorification of the Superb, in the municipal palace of Genoa; the Glory of St. Andrew, in the ceiling of the church of the Duchess of Galliera hospital; the mosaic lunettes for the facade of S. Maria del Fiore in Florence. He, with an innate Tiepolesque fervor, broke the bonds of the historical academicism of the Florentine environment in which he had trained, and drew profit from the romantic and verist experiences of Domenico Morelli. Some of his Madonnas, such as the very well known Quasi oliva speciosa in campis (at Sampierdarena), became popular. B. is considered the greatest Ligurian painter of the nineteenth century.
