BARBERIS, ALBERTO. - Neo-Scholastic philosopher, of the Congregation of the Mission, b. in Monferrato on 14 Jan. 1847, d. in Piacenza at the Alberoni College on 2 July 1896. He studied mathematics and natural sciences; he knew, besides the classical and modern languages, Hebrew and Sanskrit, but he devoted himself principally to Thomistic philosophy, which he taught for many years. Moderator of studies at the Alberoni College until his death, in 1880 he founded Divus Thomas, an authoritative journal of sacred and philosophical studies of Thomistic orientation, which is still published today.
He wrote: Positivismus ac nova methodus psychologica professoris P. Siciliani, Piacenza 1887; Quastiones de esse formali: Esse formale estne creaturis intrinsecum annor?, ibid. 1887; besides numerous and varied articles published in Divus Thomas in volumes I-V.
