BARNABA di SAN CARLO. — Discalced Carmelite, in the world Francesco Bertarelli, born in Melegnano (Milan), he professed in Milan in 1627 and in 1641 was sent as a missionary to the East; there, residing mostly in Basra (Mesopotamia), he devoted himself to the conversion of the Mandaeans (called «Christians of St. John the Baptist»). He was one of the missionaries who best understood the conditions of the East, as is evident from his numerous letters. He died at the Štráz station (Persia) on 1 October 1667.
