BARTHOLOMEW of Saint Philip Neri. — Discalced Carmelite ascetical writer of noble lineage (born Giacomo Antonio Origoni), born near Varese in 1591, died while prior in Modena on 26 December 1638.
He took the Carmelite habit in Rome on 25 April 1613; after completing his theological studies he was sent back to the Lombardy province, where he served as a theology lecturer, prior (Milan 1623, Bologna 1628) and provincial (1634–37). In this capacity he published four pastoral letters to the religious of his province, of high ascetical value: 1) De bono observantiae regularis; 2) De interna et externa solitudine; 3) De oratione et interna cum Deo conversatione; 4) De damnis a diabolo intentis (published in Collectio Mediolanensis, Milan 1671–73).
