BARRÓN, VICENTE. – A Spanish Dominican, confessor of St Teresa, born about 1505. He studied at the theological college of the Dominicans in Salamanca. Around 1534 he was at Ávila, where for the first time he was confessor to the young Teresa de Ahumada and to her father. Around 1544 he was professor of theology at Ávila and again confessor to St Teresa of Jesus, who says of him (Vita, chap. VII) that he was “a man of great virtue and greatly fearing God,” and that he was “of great benefit” to her, because “he took the good of my soul to heart and at once made me recognize the dangerous state in which I found myself.” He taught theology at the Universities of Salamanca (1548), Valladolid (1551–54), and Alcalá (1554–57). Having attained the degree of master of theology (1565), he taught theology at the University of Toledo and at the same time served as consultant to the Inquisition. St Teresa, wishing to found one of her monasteries at Toledo, again chose him as director of her conscience and counsellor, and he, through his great influence, overcame every difficulty. The date of his death is unknown.
One unpublished work by him is known, the Commentari alla 1ª-2ª della Somma di s. Tommaso (Vatican Library, cod. Ottob., 1941).
