BARTOLOMEO dello SPIRITO SANTO. — Discalced Carmelite (in the world Giacinto Torricelli), originally from Modena (1640), he made his profession in Milan (1656); in 1676 he was in the seminary for missions in Rome, and with other confrères was sent to Malabar to arrange for the election of a successor to the elderly apostolic vicar Alessandro de Campo. Despite threats and intrigues, he succeeded in carrying out his mission, and worked until his death to reunite the schismatic churches with Rome. He died in 1680 at Mattinceri, poisoned by the schismatics.
