BARTHOLOMEW of the Holy Spirit. - Discalced Carmelite (in secular life Giacinto Torricelli), originally from Modena (1640), professed in Milan (1656); in 1676 he was in the seminary of the missions in Rome, and along with others of similar standing was sent to Malabar to assist in the election of a successor to the aged apostolic vicar Alessandro de Campo. Despite threats and intrigues he succeeded in carrying out his mission, and worked until his death to reconcile the schismatic churches with Rome. He died in 1680 at Mattingeri, poisoned by the schismatics.
