GIUSEPPE dello SPIRITO SANTO. — Portuguese mystical theologian, Discalced Carmelite, in the world Giuseppe Barroso, born on 26 December 1609 at Braga, called Lusitanus, died at Madrid on 27 January 1676.
He donned the habit of the Discalced Carmelites in 1632 at Lisbon. An excellent preacher, he converted many sinners. He guided many souls along the path of perfection and was endowed with supernatural charisms. In 1654 he founded a convent of his Order at Braga, and subsequently several others in other cities of Portugal; he refused the episcopal see offered to him by the King.

GIUSEPPE dello SPIRITO SANTO. — In the world Giuseppe Velarde, Spanish theologian, Discalced Carmelite, born in 1667 at Huelva (Andalusia), died at Madrid on 2 June 1736. He became a Discalced Carmelite at Seville, where he professed his vows on 14 November 1683. He taught philosophy and theology for 9 years at the College of Ecija, then at Seville, of which he was rector three times; he was also provincial of the province of Andalusia (1712–15), general definitor of the Congregation of Spain (1712–1718, 1724), and finally superior general (1736), but died a few months after his election.
He wrote: Cursus theologiae mystico-scholasticae, iuxta doctrinam D. Thomae... (6 vols., Seville 1720–40), the most extensive, most perfect, and most profound work on the subject. New edition prepared by Fr. Anastasio di S. Paolo (Bruges 1924–29), still incomplete.
