GIOVANNI PIETRO della MADRE DI DIO. – Born Giovanni Chassagne, a Discalced Carmelite missionary, he was born in 1620 in Villefranche (diocese of Lyon), professed on 6 July 1641 in Avignon; in 1655 he was in the mission of Syria, of which he was one of its most illustrious missionaries. After bringing very many heretics and schismatics into Catholic unity, he died, a victim of charity, on 3 July 1669 at Giudaita (near Aleppo), while assisting the plague-stricken. Besides several reports on the mission in Syria, he left in manuscript many works of a catechetical and apologetic nature in the Arabic language.
