GIOVANNI PIETRO della MADRE DI DIO. - In the world Giovanni Chassagne, a Discalced Carmelite missionary, born in 1620 at Villefranche (diocese of Lyon), he made his profession on 6 July 1641 at Avignon; in 1655 he went to the Syrian mission, of which he was one of the most distinguished missionaries. After bringing very many heretics and schismatics into Catholic union, he died, a victim of charity, on 3 July 1669 at Giudaida (near Aleppo), while assisting cholera patients. Besides several accounts of the Syrian mission, he left in manuscript many catechetical and apologetic works in the Arabic language.
