GIUSEPPE MARIA del MONTE CARMELO, called el Cadete. — Venerable Spanish Discalced Carmelite, born on 15 October 1763 in Vigo, to Manuel Jacinto de Acevedo y Navia, field marshal of the armies of King Carlo III; died on 3 June 1837.
Having completed his humanities studies in Oviedo, he attended the Military Academy for three years; upon leaving it in 1782 as an officer of the Spanish Guards, he served in the war against the English. He then donned the habit of the Discalced Carmelites in Valladolid in 1786. Ordained a priest in Avila on 7 March, from 1797 onward he led, in the hermitage convent of Los Batuecas, a life of austere mortification, atoning for the sins of the world; this was interrupted only, by order of his superiors, by preaching and missions in the surrounding area, and by spiritual exercises preached in various seminaries and for ecclesiastical prelates. After the suppression of religious convents in Spain (1835), he remained in his hermitage convent until his death, venerated by all as a saint. On account of the many miracles worked through his intercession, the informative process for his beatification was initiated in 1873.
