BAUDRILLART, HENRI-MARIE-ALFRED. - Cardinal, b. in Paris on 6 Jan. 1859, d. there on 19 May 1942. Having earned degrees in history and law, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory in 1890; three years later he became a priest and a professor at the "Institut catholique" of Paris, to which he was to give a notable impetus as rector from 1907 to 1942. In 1915 he founded the "Comité catholique de propagande française à l'étranger". A member of the French Academy (2 May 1918), he was elected titular bishop of Himeria on 29 July 1921, promoted to the titular archiepiscopal see of Melitene in 1928, and elevated to the cardinalate by Pius XI in the secret Consistory of 16 Dec. 1935.

He was editorial secretary (1891-97) and then director (1898-1908) of the Bulletin critique; one of the founders of the Revue pratique d'apologie (1905); first director of the DHG (vols. I-III, Paris 1912-24). He wrote several works, among which the following deserve to be noted: Philippe V et la cour de France (5 vols., Paris 1890-1901, his principal work); L'Eglise catholique. La Renaissance. Le Protestantisme (ibid. 1904); Quatre cent ans de Concordat (ibid. 1905); Lettres de direction de mgr. d'Hulst (ibid. 1905); Vie de mgr. d'Hulst (2 vols., ibid. 1912-14).
