BASILIDE, Saint, Martyr. — Of this martyr of suburban Tuscia, buried at the twelfth milestone of the Via Aurelia, near Lorium, between La Bottaccia and Castel di Guido, no reliable biographical data are known; the three hagiographical compositions concerning him are late and devoid of historical value. The Hieronymian and Roman Martyrologies commemorate him on June 10 and 12, but the laterculus entries are corrupted and inconsistent, particularly in the Roman one. The Würzburg Gospel Lectionary (7th century) and subsequently the other pure-type Roman Lectionaries of later date commemorate him without companions on June 12 (cf. Klauser). The Gelasian Sacramentary of the 8th century commemorates him on the same day, placing him before the heterogeneous group of the old Gelasian: Quirinus, Nabore, and Nazarius, a group still present today in the Roman Missal. It seems to us that the preferred date for his *dies natalis* is June 12. Nothing remains of the basilica erected over the body of Basilide at the twelfth milestone of the Via Aurelia, mentioned in the Itinerarium Malmesburiense, nor of the church "S. Basiliadis in Merulana," recorded in the Liber Pontificalis in the life of Leo III.
