BELIGATTI, CASSIANO. - Born at Macerata in 1708, died there in 1785. A Capuchin (1725) of the province of the Marche, he set out with nine other brethren for Tibet in 1738, arriving in Lhasa in Jan. 1741. In Aug. 1742 he went on to Nepal, carrying out his work also in Bengal until 1756. Having returned to his homeland because of illness, he published the Memorie storiche concerning his missionary companion Giuseppe M. Bernini da Gargnasco (Verona 1767); under the auspices of Propaganda Fide, l'Alphabetum Brammahanicum seu Indostanum universitatis Kasi (Rome 1771), and l'Alphabetum Tangutanum sive Tibetanum (ibid. 1773). Of historical interest is his Giornale (1738–56), whose first part was partially edited by A. Magnaghi (Florence 1902); the manuscript of the second part is now lost.
