BELLARINO, GIOVANNI. - Barnabite theologian, b. at Castelnuovo (Brescia) in 1552, d. at Milano on 28 Aug. 1630. He studied at the University of Brera in Milano and taught philosophy and theology. He contributed effectively to the spread and consolidation of his Order.
He published the fruit of his researches on method: Praxis scientiarum seu methodus scientifica practice considerata (Mi-
lano 1606). He methodically expounded and explained the doctrine of the Council of Trent and of the Roman Catechism in various pamphlets, which he subsequently gathered into a volume entitled: Doctrina S. Concilii Tridentini et Catechismi Romani de completa summa S. Evangelii (ibid. 1615). The same doctrine is reworked and demonstrated in: Doctrina catholica ex S. Concilio Tridentino et Catechismo Romano etc. (ibid. 1620). From the last two works he drew the pamphlet: Praxis ad omnes veritates evangelicas, cum certitudine fidei probandas et ad omnes haereses cum eadem certitudine confutandas (ibid. 1626). He also applied his method to the study of St. Thomas: Doctrina de physicis praemotionibus, de generica determinatione omnium rerum et causarum ad actu operandum (ibid. 1624). He wished to combine all his writings into a single work, which remained unfinished: Speculum humanae atque divinae sapientiae (ibid. 1630).
