Bellermann, Christian Friedrich

BELLERMANN, CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH. - Protestant pastor, b. 18 July 1793 in Erfurt, d. at Bonn on 24 March 1863. He was the son of a professor of theology, who left us, besides various biblical publications, three dissertations Über die Gemmen der Alten mit dem Abraxasbilde (Erfurt 1817-19), still useful. Brought by his ministry to Lisbon and to Naples, he took the opportunity to carry out original studies in those countries.

Thus, among many pamphlets of a theological nature, he was also able to publish two works of merit: Die alten Liederbücher der Portugiesen (Berlin 1840), and Über die ältesten christlichen Begräbnisstätten, besonders die Katakomben zu Neapel (Hamburg 1839). In the latter there is for the first time an accurate plan and a systematic study (with color reproductions) of the great catacomb of St. Januarius, very remarkable for that time.
