BELLERMANN, CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH. – Protestant pastor, born on 18 July 1793 in Erfurt, died in Bonn on 24 March 1863. He was the son of a professor of theology, who left us, besides various biblical publications, three dissertations, Über die Gemmen der Alten mit dem Abraxasbilde (Erfurt 1817–19), which are still useful. His ministry took him to Lisbon and Naples, and he took advantage of this to carry out original studies in those countries.
Thus, among many pamphlets of a theological nature, he was also able to publish two works of merit: Die alten Liederbücher der Portugiesen (Berlin 1840), and Über die ältesten christlichen Begrüßinistätten, besonders die Katakomben zu Neapel (Hamburg 1839). The latter contains, for the first time, an accurate plan and a systematic study (with colour reproductions) of the great catacomb of S. Gennaro, which was highly noteworthy for its time.
