BELLERMANN, CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH. — Protestant pastor, born in Erfurt on 8 July 1793, died in Bonn on 24 March 1863. He was the son of a professor of theology, who left us, besides various biblical publications, three dissertations Über die Gennem der Alten mit dem Abraxasbilde (Erfurt 1817-19), still useful.
Called by his ministry to Lisbon and Naples, he took advantage of this to conduct original studies in those countries.
Among many pamphlets of a theological nature, he was able to publish two noteworthy works: Die alten Liederbücher der Portugiesen (Berlin 1840), and Über die ältesten christlichen Begräbnisstätten, besonders die Katakomben zu Neapel (Hamburg 1839). In the latter, for the first time, an accurate plan and a systematic study (with colour reproductions) of the great catacomb of St Januarius is presented, which at that time was quite notable.
