BENNONE. – Having relinquished his canonry at Strasbourg and taken up the eremitical life near the tomb of s. Meinrado, in 927 he was elected by Emperor Enrico I to the bishopric of Metz. Two years later, in 929, an assault deprived him entirely of his sight, and he was driven from his see. He then returned with Eberardo, a canon of Strasbourg, and other companions to the tomb of s. Meinrado, where the celebrated monastery of Einsiedeln (Switzerland) subsequently arose between 945 and 947. Died 3 August 940.
