BENNONE

BENNO. - Having left the canonry of Strasbourg and given himself to the eremitical life near the tomb of St. Meinrad, in 927 he was elected by the Emperor Henry I to the bishopric of Metz. Two years later, in 929, an attack deprived him entirely of his sight, and he was driven from his see. He then returned, together with Eberhard, a canon of Strasbourg, and other companions, to the tomb of St. Meinrad, where later, between 945 and 947, the famous monastery of Einsiedeln (Switzerland) arose. Died on 3 August 940.
