BENNONE. — Having left the canonry of Strasbourg and taken up a hermit’s life near the tomb of St Meinrad in 927, he was chosen by Emperor Henry I for the see of Metz. Two years later, in 929, an attack deprived him entirely of his sight, and he was driven from his see. He then returned with Eberhard, a canon of Strasbourg, and other companions to St Meinrad’s tomb, where between 945 and 947 there arose the celebrated monastery of Einsiedeln (Switzerland). Died 3 Aug. 940.
