BERNADOT, MARIE-VINCENT. - French Dominican, b. 14 June 1883, d. at Labastide-l'Evêque on 25 June 1941; an active promoter of Christian renewal in France between 1920 and 1940.
Having completed his studies in Italy, he founded at Juvisy near Paris, after some years of fruitful activity among intellectuals, La Vie spirituelle (1920) and, in 1928, La Vie intellectuelle, with the precise aim of providing clear doctrinal and practical guidance in such troubled times. Yet his social and political ideas were at times debated. His striking editorials were signed « Civis », « Christianus », « Apostolus ». In 1930 he created the centre for cultural and publishing apostolate associated with Les Editions du Cerf (transferred from Juvisy to Paris in 1935), himself publishing writings rich in spirituality, among them the widely circulated De l'Eucharistie à la Trinité (Toulouse 1919; Paris 1941, 125th thousand), and Notre Dame dans ma vie (Paris 1937 and 1938, 30th thousand).
