Bernadot, Marie-Vincent

BERNADOT, MARIE-VINCENT. - French Dominican b. June 14, 1883, d. at Labastide-l'Evêque on June 25, 1941, an active promoter of the Christian renewal in France between 1920 and 1940.

After completing his studies in Italy, he founded at Juvisy near Paris, after some years of fruitful activity among intellectuals, La Vie spirituelle (1920) and in 1928 La Vie intellectuelle, with the precise aim of providing, in such troubled times, clear directions of doctrine and action. But his social and political ideas were at times disputed. His evocative leading articles were signed "Civis," "Christianus," "Apostolus." In 1930 he created the center of cultural and editorial apostolate that is headquartered at Les Editions du Cerf (moved from Juvisy to Paris in 1935), himself publishing writings dense with spirituality, among them the very widely circulated De l'Eucharistie à la Trinité (Toulouse 1919; Paris 1941, 125th thousand), and Notre Dame dans ma vie (Paris 1937 and 1938, 30th thousand).
