BOARETTI, FRANCESCO. — Preacher and polygraph, b. at Masi, near Padua, on 16 August 1748, d. at Venice on 15 May 1799. He studied at the seminary of Padua, where he subsequently taught philosophy. From 1785 he taught rhetoric in the “schools of the clerics” of Venice, established at that time.
Among his various works and translations, mostly of classical and Italian literature, we note the dialectal parody of the Iliad in ottava rima, entitled Omero in Lombardia (2 vols., Venice 1788); the translations from Hebrew of Ecclesiastes, Wisdom, and the Psalms; and the historical work on the Dottrina de' Padri greci relativa alle circostanze della Chiesa nel sec. XVIII (2 vols., there 1791).
