BOARETTI, Francesco. – Preacher and polygraph, born at Masi, near Padua, on 16 Aug. 1748, died at Venice on 15 May 1799. He studied at the patronal seminary, later teaching philosophy there. From 1785 he taught eloquence in the “schools of the clerics” in Venice, then recently established.
Among his various works and translations, mostly of classical and Italian literature, we note the dialectal parody of the Iliad in ottava rima, entitled Omero in Lombardia (2 vols., Venice 1788); his versions from Hebrew of Ecclesiastes, Wisdom, and the Psalms; and the historical work on the Doctrine of the Greek Fathers regarding the circumstances of the Church in the 18th century (2 vols., ibid. 1791).
