Boaretti, Francesco

BOARETTI, FRANCESCO. - Preacher and polygraph, b. at Masi, near Padua, on 16 Aug. 1748, d. at Venice on 15 May 1799. He studied at the seminary of Padua, where he later taught philosophy. From 1785 he taught eloquence at the "schools of the clerics" of Venice, which had then been established.

Among his various works and translations, mostly of classical and Italian literature, we note the dialect parody of the Iliad in ottava rima, entitled Omero in Lombardia (2 vols., Venice 1788); the versions from the Hebrew of Ecclesiastes, Wisdom and the Psalms; and the historical work on the Doctrine of the Greek Fathers concerning the circumstances of the Church in the 18th century (2 vols., ibid. 1791).
