BOCCHI, GIROLAMO. - Scholar, often wrongly called "Boutrius", "Bourti", etc., b. in Florence ca. 1595. He was first a Conventual Franciscan, then at the age of twenty and for almost his whole life a Capuchin (1614), finally returning (ca. 1655) to the Conventuals. He died in Holy Week, between 21 and 27 March, 1660, at Pomarance (near Volterra), where he was preaching the Lenten sermons. Much versed in history, chronology and biblical cosmology, he was also a good preacher.
He is the author of a vast historical-biblical-theological encyclopedia: Monopanthon harmonicum et chronologicum... ex divinis et humanis litteris... compilata et ad normam psalterii decem chordarum coaptata..., divided into 2 parts and 10 books
(part 1, Bologna 1654; it is not known whether part 2 was printed), treatises on chronology and biblical history (books 1 and 4), on dogmatics, anthropology, cosmography and universal geography. Other writings of his are remembered on the history of heresies, on religious and military orders, on Le bellezze della città di Fiorenza, etc.
