JUAN DE BONILLA. — Spanish Franciscan, born around the middle of the 16th century. In 1571 he was superior of the convent of the Observants at Villasilos (Palencia). He was well versed in theology, ascetics, and mysticism. In 1580 his *Tratado de la paz del alma* was published simultaneously in Salamanca and Alcalá de Henares, a work highly esteemed for the purity of its language, the solidity and depth of its doctrine, and the clarity of its exposition.
His teachings remain ever relevant, and his work is still useful and fruitful even today. The book was reprinted many times in Spain and was translated into Italian (1587), French (1662), English, and other languages. The last edition was that of Paris in 1912.
