BONVESIN DA RIVA. - Poet and teacher of grammar, b. in Milan between 1240 and 1250, d. there on 13 March 1315. Of an aristocratic family, he entered the Order of the Humiliati.
His output is in Latin and in the vernacular, with the most frequent use of monorhymed quatrains in alexandrine verses. Of the works in the vernacular, the Libro delle tre scritture, finished before 1274, is of greater merit: in more than two thousand verses it narrates the pains of hell (scrittura nigra), the sufferings undergone to redeem oneself (scrittura rossa), and heavenly bliss (scrittura dotata). It makes no mention of purgatory: it is silent, it does not deny; and this cannot lead one to consider him a heretic. With this poem, worthy of study, B. is one of the first precursors of Dante. A short work worthy of note is Il Trattato dei mesi. Also highly esteemed are certain didactic compositions, Disputatio rosae cum stola, De quinquaginta curialitatibus ad mensam, De elemosynis, and a vernacular rendering of Cato's Disticha de moribus. A simple and clear narrator, he always sets out to achieve a moral aim, not an artistic one.
