CASTELLI, BENEDETTO. - Benedictine mathematician and philosopher, b. in Brescia in 1577, d. in Rome in 1644. He was one of Galileo's best disciples, with whom he also collaborated on astronomical research. He taught mathematics at the University of Pisa. He devoted himself to the study of physics and paid particular attention to the study of running waters. On the movement of fluids and currents he wrote the work: Della misura delle acque correnti, published in Rome in the years 1628-39. To this study he added the Demostrazioni geometriche della misura etc., studies that he dedicated to the pontiff Urban VIII, who had previously consulted him on rather complex hydraulic works.
The activity of C., however, did not remain confined within the sphere of these disciplines: he left us some philosophical treatises, published under the editorship of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici. If not exactly rich in merits as regards style and the fluency of the periods, these treatises are essentially valuable for a content of intense passion: the defense of his master; truly few have felt such deep affection for Galileo. Also known, by C., is a Discorso sopra la calamita, which A. Favaro published in Boncompagni's Bullettino (16 [1883], p. 545).
