BORGHINI, VINCENZO MARIA. - Benedictine monk, philologist, and archaeologist, b. at Firenze on 29 Oct. 1515, d. 18 Aug. 1580. A profound student of the pure Tuscan language, he pursued studies on Dante and the Divina Commedia. Cosimo I entrusted him with presiding over the commission that was to bring the Decameron into conformity with the laws of the Council of Trent. The Biblioteca Nazionale of Firenze preserves, by B., a booklet in the vernacular, Dei conviti degli antichi, a collection of Latin inscriptions and epigraphs, as well as a Latin treatise on Roman families. His Discorsi sulle vicende e le cose di Firenze were published posthumously in 2 vols. He proved to be an acute critic and a writer of distinction.
