VINCENZO MARIA BORGHINI. — Benedictine monk, philologist, and archaeologist, born in Florence on 29 Oct. 1515, died on 18 Aug. 1580. A profound scholar of the pure Tuscan language, he conducted studies on Dante and the *Divine Comedy*. Cosimo I entrusted him with presiding over the commission charged with conforming the *Decameron* to the decrees of the Council of Trent. The National Library of Florence preserves, among Borghini’s works, a small vernacular booklet, *Dei convitti degli antichi*, a collection of Latin inscriptions and epigraphs, as well as a Latin treatise on Roman families. His *Discorsi sulle vicende e le cose di Firenze* were published posthumously in 2 volumes. He proved himself a keen critic and a writer of distinction.
