BORGHINI, VINCENZO MARIA. - Benedictine monk, philologist and archaeologist, b. in Florence on 29 Oct. 1515, d. on 18 Aug. 1580. A profound scholar of pure Tuscan, he carried out studies on Dante and on the Divine Comedy. Cosimo I charged him with presiding over the commission that was to bring the Decameron into conformity with the laws of the Council of Trent. The National Library of Florence preserves, by B., a booklet in the vernacular, Dei conviti degli antichi, a collection of Latin inscriptions and epigraphs, as well as a Latin treatise on Roman families. His Discorsi sulle vicende e le cose di Firenze were published posthumously, in 2 vols. He proved himself a shrewd critic and a writer of merit.
