BONTEMPI, GAUDENZIO DA BRESCIA. - Capuchin theologian b. in 1612, d. March 25, 1672.
Definitor and preacher, he is known above all in the history of theology for the work Palladium theologicum, seu toto theologia scholastica... ad intimam mentem divi Bonaventurae (7 vols. in-fol., Lyon 1676), published posthumously by his disciples and dedicated to King Louis XIV. B. excels among those Capuchin authors who represent the Bonaventuran school. With a vast and thorough exposition he sets out in a summa of theology, which remained incomplete in some treatises because of his death, the doctrine of St. Bonaventure, whose richness and relevance he vindicates also with reference to contemporary theologians outside the Order. In emphasizing the individuality of Bonaventuran thought, he tends rather to bring it close to the doctrine of St. Thomas, while he displays a marked animosity against the Scotist school. Some bibliographers also attribute to him a commentary on the catechism of St. Peter Canisius.
