BOTTENS, FULGENTIUS. - Franciscan mystical writer, born at Courtrai (Belgium) on 31 July (or 31 Aug.) 1637, died at Bruges on 14 Oct. 1717. He successively served as guardian, lecturer in theology and Sacred Scripture, and provincial. He became a respected master in ascetical and mystical theology.
S. Dirks lists some twenty of his works, among which stand out: *Scintillare seraphica, sive exercitia ascetica quotidiana ad amoris divini perfectionem aspirantibus utilissima* (Ghent 1673); *Vita Una et Trina, qua uni trinque Domino perfectissime servitur et vivitur* (ibid. 1684); *Nieuwen durch door den authente oversien gecorrigeert en op een beter order gestelt* (ibid. 1716): this work, like some others by B., teaches Christian perfection in the light of the Heart of Jesus; *Iudicium pacifici Salomonis Christi Domini Nostri super controversiis olim et nostris maxime temporibus agitatiis inter sectatores theologiae mysticae ab una parte, eorumque adversarios ab altera...* (ibid. n.d. [1714]).
