BOTTENS, FULGENTIUS. - Franciscan mystical writer, b. at Courtrai (Belgium) on 31 July (or 31 Aug.) 1637, d. at Bruges on 14 Oct. 1717. He was successively guardian, lecturer in theology and Sacred Scripture, and provincial. He became an esteemed master of ascetical and mystical theology.
S. Dirks reviews some twenty of his works, among which the following stand out: Scintillae seraphicae, sive exercitia ascetica quotidiana ad amoris divini perfectionem aspirantibus utilissima, (Ghent 1673); Vita Una et Trina, qua uni trinoque Domino perfectissime servitur et vivitur (ibid. 1684); Nieuwen druch door den autheur oversien gecorrigeert en op een beter order gestelt (ibid. 1716): this work, like some others by B., teaches Christian perfection in the light of the Heart of Jesus; Iudicium pacifici Salomonis Christi Domini Nostri super controversiis olim et nostris maxime temporibus agitatis inter sectatores theologiae mysticae ab una parte, eorumque adversarios ab altera... (ibid., n.d. [1714]).
