BRISSELOT (Bryselot, Brixelotus, Brisselotto, Briselotto), Jean. - Carmelite from Flanders, born at Valenciennes, where he took the religious habit; having obtained a doctorate in theology in Paris (1502), he was then a professor at the Sorbonne, and prior of the convent of Valenciennes. Appointed titular bishop of Beirut and auxiliary of Cambrai (4 April 1505), he administered this diocese until 1517, the year in which he became confessor of Charles V and was appointed archbishop of Oristano (Sardinia), a see he never reached. Admired for his vast erudition, he was called by Erasmus "unum e luminaribus Ecclesiae". Having resigned as archbishop (16 April 1520), he died in the abbey of Hautmont, on 11 September 1520. He left some twenty manuscript works, among them one on the Psalmos poenitentiales.
