BUONARROTI, FILIPPO. - Archaeologist, b. in Florence in 1661, d. there in 1733. Having come to Rome as a young man, he entered the good graces of Cardinal Carpegna, who placed him in charge of his library and museum. He published its rich numismatic collection (Rome 1698) in an excellent manner. That same year he was appointed librarian of the Vatican Library, but then, forced to leave Rome, he returned to Florence, where he gathered a museum rich in epigraphs, coins and ivories.

He earned the gratitude of Christian antiquities with the book Osservazioni sopra alcuni frammenti di vasi antichi di vetro ornati di figure trovati nei cimiteri di Roma, Rome 1716, in which he discoursed learnedly on clothing and other ancient customs and especially on the nimbus.
