Caiani, Maria Anna

CAIANI, MARIA ANNA. - In religion M. Margherita, born in Poggio a Caiano on 2 Nov. 1863, died in Florence on 8 Aug. 1921. Although inclined toward the world, having become a Dominican tertiary, she led an increasingly pious life. After unsuccessfully attempting a cloistered novitiate, in '94 she started a school for children, the germ of the institute of the Suore Minime del S. Cuore (v.), founded by her with heroic charity for educational and welfare purposes. She was a lawgiver and an exemplary mother. She greatly expanded the houses of the Congregation, after the trials undertaken for nursing assistance in the war hospitals.
