CINI, ADELAIDE, Venerable. – Born in Valletta (Malta) on 25 Oct. 1838, died at Ħamrun (Malta) on 28 Mar. 1885. She remained in the world, vowed to God, to redeem wayward girls through work and to save those in peril and orphans. She traveled through villages keeping vigil and fasting, preparing at Ħamrun the institute of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which she maintained with her own resources, aided by private individuals, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, and the government; and which she directed even when ill. She also took care to assist mothers with illegitimate children. After her death, which occurred from heart disease caused by a beating and continuous threats, the Work was canonically approved in 1890; the cause of beatification was introduced by decree of 23 Feb. 1910.
