CINI, Adelaide, Venerable. - B. at Valletta (Malta) on 25 Oct. 1838, d. at Hamrun (Malta) on 28 March 1885. She remained in the world, consecrated to God, in order to redeem, through work, wayward girls and to save those in danger and orphans. She traveled through the villages amid vigils and fasts, preparing at Hamrun the institute of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which she maintained with her own means, aided by private individuals, by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and by the government; and which she directed even while ill. Her care was also to assist the mothers of illegitimate children. After her death, which occurred from heart disease caused by a beating and by continual threats, the Work was canonically approved in 1890; the cause of beatification was introduced by decree of 23 Feb. 1910.
