CINI, ADELAIDE, venerable. — Born at La Valletta (Malta) on 25 October 1838, died at Hamrun (Malta) on 28 March 1885. She remained in the world, devoted to God, in order through her work to redeem wayward girls and save those in danger and orphans. She went around the villages amid vigils and fasts, preparing at Hamrun the Institute of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which she maintained with her own means, aided by private individuals, the Society of S. Vincenzo de' Paoli, and the government; and which she directed even while ill. She also made it her concern to assist mothers of illegitimate children. After her death, which occurred from heart disease caused by a beating and continual threats, the Work was canonically approved in 1890; the cause of beatification was introduced by decree of 23 February 1910.
