CALANDIONE. - Patriarch of Antioch, successor in 481 to Stephen II who had been killed by the Monophysites, he owed his elevation to the emperor Zeno and to the patriarch Acacius of Constantinople. An ardent supporter of the Council of Chalcedon, he began his episcopate with energetic measures against his opponents in the faith, Peter Fullo, Timothy Giuro (v.) and the encyclical of Basiliscus that condemned Chalcedon. But he did not remain long in the favor of his patrons, and Zeno, at the instigation of Acacius, exiled him to the Great Oasis (484). The alleged motive was political: for having erased the emperor's name from the diptychs and encouraged the rebellion of Illus and Leontius; in reality it was for having aroused the animosity of Acacius, whom C. accused of having anathematized the decrees of Chalcedon, and for his refusal to sign the Henoticon of Zeno and to break communion with Pope Felix III.
