PIETRO FULLONE, Monophysite patriarch of ANTIOCHIA. - The date and place of his birth are unknown; he died at Antiochia in 490. Having become a priest, he directed a sanctuary at Chalcedon and from there in 464 went with the future emperor Zenone to Antiochia, where, during the absence of the patriarch Martirio and with Zenone’s support, he became patriarch: the first Monophysite patriarch.
Shortly afterwards he was deposed, but returned for a brief time, only to be deposed again and confined in a monastery at Costantinopoli (467?). He returned in 475 under the usurper Basilisco, who favoured the Monophysites. But when Basilisco was deposed by Zenone in 476, P. F. too had to go into exile. Nevertheless, Zenone changed his religious policy by proclaiming in 482 the formula of the Emoticon. In 483 P. F. was again installed in the see of Antiochia, where he remained until his death.
With P. F., Monophysitism triumphed in the patriarchate of Antiochia. He added to the Trisagion the formula « qui crucifixus es pro nobis ». P. F. was patriarch of Antiochia four times: 460-65(?); 466(?)-467(?); 475-76; 483-90.
