CARINI. – City in Sicily, 27 km from Palermo; it seems to have been the C. to which Gregory the Great alludes as an episcopal see (Jaffé-Wattembach, 1389, 1880, 1881). In 595, upon the death of the incumbent, the Pontiff united the small church of C. with that of Reggio, then governed by Bonifacio. By 602 the union had already been dissolved, and C. had its own bishop, named Barbaro, appointed visitor of Palermo.
