CASIMIR, Saint. - B. Oct. 5, 1458, d. at Grodno on March 4, 1484. Son of Casimir IV of Poland and of Elizabeth of Habsburg and raised in the school of the historian Jan Długosz, he was to inherit, together with the Hungarian throne, his mother's legacy. But after the failure of the expedition of 1471 against King Matthias Corvinus, the hope of the Hungarian throne faded. For some time C. replaced his father in the government of Poland; then he went, as the king's representative, to neighboring Lithuania. And here, at Vilnius, the holy city, worn out by tuberculosis, he died after having lived, especially in his last years, an ascetic and speculative life. In 1521 Leo X canonized him; Clement VIII, in 1602, granted Poland his Office and Mass, which Paul V then extended (1621) to the whole Church. Popular sentiment made him the patron saint of Lithuania. Feast on March 4.
