BELIGATTI, CASSIANO. - Born in Macerata in 1708, died there in 1785. A Capuchin (1725) of the province of the Marches, he set out with nine other confreres for Tibet in 1738, arriving at Lhasa in January 1741. In August 1742 he moved on to Nepal, carrying on his work also in Bengal until 1756. Having returned to his homeland through illness, he published the Memorie storiche concerning his fellow missionary Giuseppe M. Bernini da Gargnasco (Verona 1767); under the care of the Propaganda Fide, l'Alphabetum Brammahanicum seu Indostanum universitatis Kasi (Rome 1771), and l'Alphabetum Tangutanum sive Tibetanum (ibid. 1773). Historically interesting is his Giornale (1738-56), the first part of which has been partially edited by A. Magnaghi (Florence 1902); the manuscript of the second is now lost.
