CICOGNINI, IACOPD. - Writer, b. at Castrocaro in 1557, d. at Florence in 1633. Having earned a degree in jurisprudence at Pisa in 1600, he tried many activities in life, first as ambassador at Rome to certain cardinals, then as governor in various cities of the Papal States; finally he followed his dramatic bent and composed at Florence, between 1611 and 1624, with rough popular vigor, some sacred plays: Il trionfo di Davide, L'arcangiolo Raffaello, Il martirio di s. Agata.
In these works, more than in the rustic stanzas or in the secular dramas (his son Giacinto Andrea also composed theatrical works, being the first to spread in Italy the taste for Spanish theater), lies the physiognomy of C. In his rhymes, which are an imitation of those of Chiabrera, and in his entire work as a writer, he sought to express a state of dark and sad restlessness (C. ended up mad and a suicide), several times seeking in the sacred themes of the Bible elevation and religious comfort.
