THE CITTADINO DI BRESCIA. - A Catholic daily newspaper of local scope in Brescia, but with wider resonance due to the personality of its most renowned editor, GIORGIO MONTINI, and for being the expression of one of Italy’s regions with the most pronounced political education.
Under the direction of GIORGIO MONTINI, the newspaper launched in 1880 the formula “preparation through abstention,” opposing it to the more intransigent “neither elected nor electors” of Don Margotti and *L’Unità Cattolica*. The formula, later adopted by Don Albertario and Filippo Meda in the second phase of *L’Osservatore Cattolico*, contributed to the emergence of a new direction in the political movement of Catholics, leading them first to the “Catholic deputies,” and then to full participation in political life. Like almost all Catholic dailies, *Il Cittadino di Brescia* adhered at that time to the Italian People’s Party and, along with it, was swept away by the Fascist reaction in 1926. In its final years it was directed by Carlo Bresciani, a deputy in Parliament like Montini. It had been founded in 1878.
