CITTADINO DI BRESCIA (IL). - A Catholic daily newspaper of Brescia, local in character but of wider resonance because of the personality of its best-known editor, Giorgio Montini, and because it expressed one of the Italian regions with the most marked political education.
Under the editorship of Giorgio Montini, in fact, the newspaper launched in 1880 the formula « preparation in abstention », setting it against the more uncompromising one, « neither elected representatives nor voters », of d. Margotti and the Unità Cattolica. The formula, taken up again by d. Albertario and Filippo Meda in the Osservatore cattolico of its second phase, contributed to the emergence of the new orientation of the Catholics’ political movement, which led them first to the “Catholic deputies,” and then to full participation in political life. Like almost all Catholic daily newspapers, Il C. di Brescia then joined the Partito popolare italiano and, together with it, was overwhelmed by the Fascist reaction in 1926. In its final years it was edited by Carlo Bresciani, a member of Parliament like Montini. It had been founded in 1878.
